Saying Goodbye

On Saturday we had the opportunity to say goodbye to my Uncle Jack. We went up to Logan, Utah for the burial. Logan is where my great Grandmother and Grandfather are buried and where Jack will be laid to rest with them.
As soon as we got there Gauge was ready to be out of the car. Its about a 2+ hour drive from Provo. We thought we would let him walk around but after only a few minutes he was doing hurdles over headstones.
Ryan was so perfect. I had worked the night before and after getting home that morning only got an hour of sleep before we had to get up and get ready. When I got up he had the boys fed and was getting them dressed. Then he drove to Logan where he watched Gauge and Paxton so that I could talk to family and worry about Jack. This event took our whole day. Thank you Ry!
Jack is a war Veteran. He was in the Navy. It was said at the funeral that he had flown almost every type of plane that there was the fly in the Navy. He was also a member of the VFW which is Veterans of Foreign Wars. I remember that about him, that he was very proud to be part of the VFW.
Because he is a Veteran of Foreign Wars, some members of the VFW arrived at the Funeral.
They Saluted Jack. Then they folded the flag that lay atop his casket. They played Taps, and then they did a Gun Salute.
After folding the flag they presented it to my Dad and thanked our family for Jack and for his service for this Country.
After the flag was handed to my Dad, he turned and gave the flag to Paxton and whispered to him to hold it tight and not to drop it.
I think that Paxton understood the responsibility he held. He wouldn't even smile and he held the flag next to his chest the whole time.
It was nice to have a chance to say goodbye to Jack. It was so wonderful to see the VFW there to honor him.
The best part was being there with my small family. I think after a week of mourning, at the funeral I was finally able to say goodbye and to let him go. He will be missed!

Great post Whit. It reminded me of my grandpa that died over a year ago, we was in the army and they did the gun salute as well, it brought a few tears to my eyes.

I'm sorry about your Uncle Jack. I love the photo of Paxton holding the flag so tightly. Your uncle was a great man to serve our country and it is fitting to be honored by the next generation who enjoys the freedoms your uncle fought for. I didn't know him but I appreciate his sacrifice. Thanks for sharing.
